XXL unveil the freshest rappers out for 2015

So the 2015 XXL freshmen cover was finally released last week. Among the list include Dej Loaf, Fetty Wap, Goldlink, K Camp, Kidd Kidd, OG Maco, Raury, Shy Glizzy, Tink and Vince Staples.

Always an important moment in hip hop, the XXL freshmen list showcases the best aspiring rappers, whilst predicting the leaders of the new school. From the looks of things this list doesn’t hold the same weight, as previous covers that introduced the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Meek Mills, Big Sean, J. Cole and many others, but it’s probably too early to judge.

One thing for sure is fans and music critics have expressed their disappointment and scepticism for some of the artist chosen, The Daily Beast gave their opinion on the list in an article entitled The ‘XXL’ Freshman Class List Is a Joke. Many have questioned the reason to include Kidd Kidd due to the amount of time he’s been in the game. But not all is in a shambles; Tink has been one to watch ever since her producer/mentor Timbaland raved about her on The Breakfast Club interview a year ago, her consistency to release hot music has only helped her buzz.

It’s strange to not see the likes of a Mick Jenkins, PartyNextDoor or ILoveMakonnen on the cover. But Vanessa Satten, the Editor-in-Chief explained that both PartyNextDoor and ILoveMakonnen, following in the footsteps of A$AP Rocky and Drake.

Another artist which seems to be a favourite among the fans is California native Vince Staples, who has built an impressive underground fan base and is looking to release his debut later this month. This list may not be the list for everyone, but it definitely showcases a range of talents that is representative of hip hop. Love or hate the list, it’s going to be interesting to see which rappers come out on top.
