little simz

In Hip Hop by Camille Addis Alem

North London’s Little Simz has just released the new visual for her masterpiece ‘I Love You, I Hate You’. This track is part of her album released in September ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’. We say that music heals the soul, in this very personal song Little Simz hits right where it needs.

Daddy Issues

During 4 minutes she confronts her conflicting feelings caused by an absent father. We witness the evolution of her introspection. Beginning in a very dark decor, we see a young teenager, who seems in conflict with himself. Carried by an orchestra, Little Simz’s intense and distinctive voice starts to tell her story.

Even though I’m angry, don’t wanna be disrespectful (I love you). Tryna figure out how to approach this in the best way (I hate you). Hard to not carry these feelings even on my best days (I love you). Never thought my parent would give me my first heartbreak (I hate you).

A special and beautiful song

The lyrics are brilliantly written, full of depth and authenticity. Pushed by powerful storytelling, everyone can relate. How many children have been confronted with parents who did not love them the way they were supposed to. The distance, resentment, misunderstanding and disappointment is witnessed in this powerful image of a father and daughter sitting at either end of a table but so far apart, like strangers. But despite the anger and pain, she manages to forgive and finish with positive results.

I keep you in my prayers ’cause life is short as we know. Every mistake you make should contribute to your growth. What you choose to avoid’ll probably come in your dreams. I’m not forgivin’ for you, man, I’m forgivin’ for me.

‘I Love You, I Hate You’ is one of her most vulnerable songs so far. Through the latest album, she has pushed herself artistically into new spaces. She sounds more mature, more confident and at peace. It feels like she never, ever misses the point and it is beautiful art!

“I Love You, I Hate You” is taken from my new album ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’.
