Should August Alsina be considered for the XXL Mag Freshman list?

XXl magazine has released their annual list of the next big acts in hip hop, this year its more than just the MCs causing the hype. The mag has expanded the Freshman list from ten to twelve artists, and more controversially included an RnB singer for the first time.

The 21 year old New Orleans singer, currently signed with Def Jam is definitely making an impact in the game, with big name collabs with the likes of Jeezy, Trinidad James and even got Trey Songz and Chris Brown on the remix to ‘I Luv this shit’, artists who he’s undoubtedly trying to snatch the shine from!

Here’s August to explain why he should be included!

Traditionally the list has been exclusively made up of rappers but with Alsina making this year’s list, the editors appear to be trying to reflect recent shifts in the scene with more rappers ‘Draking’ and singing hooks and R&B artists dropping solid bars as well.

Hip Hop purists and a section of the magazines readership have already started complaining about the dilution of the art of hip hop, but the fact of the matter is, artists like Drake, Nicki Minaj and even Future are selling records by dropping verses as well as singing choruses and as long as its popular its here to stay. So for that reason as well as his own positioning in the scene as a ‘hip hop singer’ it’s only fair to include him in the list!

Check out the Hot 97 interview here, as Peter Rosenborg faced off with the XXL editor about their decision to include an R&B singer in the mix!
