Review: Clipping – clppng

Cali experimental group Clipping definitely aren’t for everyone. Blending noise and hip hop their music is an abrasive aural assault on the ears. The beats on this record are as noisy and abstract as on the group’s debut album, Midcity, but are also more creative, using less harsh noise. The vocal delivery of emcee Daveed Diggs has meanwhile vastly improved since the last album, showcasing some phenomenal speed and precision.

Highlights include the hypnotic track ‘Dream’, which evolves into the track ‘Get Up’, literally featuring the sound of an alarm clock bleep for a beat. Another impressive track is ‘Story 2’ in which Diggs constantly switches up his flow to match the ever-changing timing of the beat. Clppng is best approached with an open mind and some people will dismiss it as Death-Grips-inspired pretentiousness. I personally think the album’s pretty dope and I love its originality and crazy intensity.
