Review: Ty Dollar $ign (+ DJ Semtex) @ XOYO, London – Sept 10
DJ Semtex has been holding a series of live events in London over the past few years, with some of the hottest names from the US taking stage in London as part of his ‘Arrival’ series. September 10 saw one of America’s hottest talents hit up the UK as part of his Europe wide tour, as the LA hip hop singer and rapper took to the stage at XOYO in Old Street, East London.
Emerging on stage following a strong warm up set from the Manchester hailing 1xtra DJ, Ty Dollar $ign was dressed for a robbery! Balaclava over the face hiding the long dreads, and a hood covering both, Ty seemed like he was ‘too cool for school’ yet still emerged as a rapper with a point to prove.
Despite his vocal style being reminiscent of R Kelly, and a string of productions, collabs and song writing credits dating back to 2010 (including writing credits on Chris Brown – Loyal, and collabing on ‘Mosh Pit’ with Dizzee Rascal and Tinie Tempah), the LA artist definitely can still spit bars! He ran thru tracks from his latest mixtape ‘Sign Language’ and very kindly cooled the crowd down by dispersing the contents of his numerous bottles of h2o!!!
Signed to Atlantic Records, and member of Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang alongside the likes of Juicy J, Ty definitely showed that his rich musical surroundings have taught him a thing or two about how to play to the crowd. He and his DJ sparked up on stage, with the security standing by wishing he could eject Ty as he would any other dread locked rude boy!!! This naturally led him on to perform ‘Irie’.
Ty ended the show with two of his biggest solo hits ‘Or Nah’ (see vid below) and ‘Paranoid’ and the fact that his set whizzed by in what seemed like a short space of time was a true testament which proved what a dope show it was!
