Essex has its fair share of sick MC’s, and the latest release from Sonny Green ‘Unfinished Business EP’ is a solid project from a unique sounding artist, with astounding production from AsIf Kid. Sonny describes how “the EP was made during a really emotional time of my life during and after my dad passing away”. Regarding the EP’s name, Sonny explained how “we as a bloodline have unfinished business to attend to”.
The 23 year old has been active in the local Southend scene since his teenage years, then known as SGB, and first came to the forefront in 2016 with ‘Grime Is Punk’. This solid project was followed up by ‘Grime Is Punk Vol 2’ which lead to an invite for Sonny to record a live Maida Vale session for BBC Introducing.
Following supporting Asian Dub Foundation at an event at Broadwater Farm, Tottenham, Sonny was soon asked to join them live and has now performed to over 50 venues across Europe. Always bringing the fire, confident live performances opening for a range of performers including the likes of Pete Doherty.
The latest project combines Sonny’s unique grime and spoken word style with producer AS.IF Kid’s solid beats throughout, making each and every track straight fire. The first of the five tracks that make up the project is ‘Gratitude Game’ (video above). Here we get the aggy ‘Grime Is Punk’ approach from Sonny that gained comments from The Guardian how he ‘delivers grime with a big, toothy, shit-eating grin.’ Ending on a more dub-like vibe with ‘Go Through’ this project has something for everyone to relate to, and with his first home town headline show the day after release this project is going to make certain heads rethink careers.
Each individual track gets a 5/5 and the project on a whole is on levels out of this world. The EP brings fresh sounds with each track. Make sure you grab a copy of ‘Unfinished Business’ from iTunes or streaming via Apple Music or Spotify!
