Review: Dr Syntax & Pete Cannon @ Beat Roots, Passing Clouds, London 22 Nov

Pete Cannon and emcee Dr Syntax definitely showed they’re the repping the true British sound with their combination of wit, lyricism and much more.

With Pete behind the decks, providing backing vocals and adlibs for Sinners, they showed they had definitely honed their set to a tee, as they performed the lions share of tracks from their collaborative album ‘Killer Combo’ at the East London venue Passing Clouds on Saturday night.

A regular criticism made of UK hip hop sets tends to be the uninspired performances, with a lack of real crowd interaction but on this occasion the ‘killer’ combination of back-and-forth, and the DJ/MC’s ‘call and response’ technique was bang on point. Despite the crowd not being that of a typical UK hip hop audience, Cannon and Syntax certainly got the best out of them, and when Pete emerged from behind the decks to drop some verses, he did so to crowd’s full appreciation! Those who had listened to the album before will have been happy to hear his bars life in the flesh, and with a sharp outfit and signature hair cut to boot, this, combined with Syntax’ contextual introductions made for a great show!

The most pleasantly surprising part of the show included a switch up into a nutty jungle track at the end of the night, which ended it on a high note – further proof that these two are steps ahead of the largely complacent competition, and evidence that years of practise make for a memorable live set! //

Their collaborative album ‘Killer Combo’ is out now via Bandcamp!
