Review: Charlie Sloth Presents: Hood Heat Vol 1
The 1xtra DJ who is a former rapper himself, has stepped into the DJ Khaled role, by putting tracks together with rappers who stay on heavy rotation. For his debut compilation album ‘Hood Heat Vol. 1’. Artists featured include Rick Ross, Lethal Bizzle, French Montana, Fekky and even more big hitters like Rich Homie Quan, Stormzy, YG, Ghetts, Mobb Deep, Future and others.
For the most part, this album is suited to anyone who has been tuning into his BBC 1xtra show, since it contains a reputable selection of big songs over the past couple of years but also great for the many haven’t heard these artists, or aren’t aware they have dropped recent bangers.
With many taste makers, bloggers, DJ’s and more championing the talent from the UK and beyond, it is only right that artists of equal footing get the shine that they have been reaching for. Lead singles ‘Look Like’ links up Jadakiss, with MOBO winner Stormzy and JMC as they deftly trade verses over a heavy instrumental.
Newly premiered track ‘Do It Big’ pairs old rivals Bashy and Ghetts with J Spades, over a lush Naughty Boy instrumental. Fekky’s standout track ‘Still Sittin’ Here’ (which would eventually lead to a collaboration with Dizzee) is included, as is the mysterious CAS’ ‘Play’, and The Purist Remix of ‘P.A.S.O.U.
The inclusion of many street album and forthcoming release tracks is a nice touch (which has had many fans frothing at the mouth to see when a release date comes, only to have it pushed back numerous times).
However, as a long time fan of the man’s vision you can’t fault him with coming with the hits for this album, as well as highlighting the future diamonds in the rough, that both the US and UK have, going from peddling their wares in different cities to headlining major music festivals.
