Review: Monika – Observatory EP

UK label Ingredients Records is winding things up a gear with an all-new imprint. Recipe Digital is upon us, and its first release is a wide-open four-tracker from Monika. Ingredients says it is “keen to represent a diversity of fresh talent” with its new offshoot. The Observatory EP is as good a mission statement as any, an expansive 170bpm workout which places Monika centre stage. The producer featured on Ingredients’ various artists Substance LP earlier this year.

Opener ‘The Pulse’ is the only straight-up d&b cut on the record and is more than good enough to carry that burden; from the splashy drums which kick things off to the frenetic synth stabs this is the genre approached from a slight angle, and packs serious weight with it.

The same approach is taken on ‘Dusk Till Dawn’, but things are screwed down into a harder-edged track. Which boils the same mass as found in the other tracks down into a more focused urgency and an altogether denser tune.
