Album mini-review: Smokey Joe & The Kid – Running To The Moon

Bordeaux beat makers, Smokey Joe and the Kid, release this lively new album set to drop May 6th. Previously described as ‘electroswing’ on their previous album, the duo have attempted to shake off the label by this time delving more into jazz, blues and soul. A diverse array of artists make features including trombone legend Fred Wesley and Yoshi Di Original.

The LP opens with a lavish ‘Ouverture’ before setting the tone with upbeat, stomping title track ‘Running To The Moon’. Produced with an MPC, all the beats are impressively live.

Highlights include the bustling and cinematic ‘Please Come Home’, which speeds up to double time for its second half, and the flamboyant action-packed ‘Smokid all Stars’ featuring an army of guest emcees. ‘The Gravel Sack’ meanwhile sees ASM matching glamorous strings and smoky sax with vivid luxury-laden imagery.
