Album: The Four Owls – Nocturnal Instinct

In Hip Hop by James Wijesinghe

The Four Owls have swooped down from High Focus HQ to drop their third album: Nocturnal Instinct. The new LP sees Fliptrix, Verb T, Leaf Dog and BVA celebrate High Focus’ 10th anniversary by pulling out all the stops. Though it doesn’t stray far from the school of UK boombap that the supergroup now synonymise, Nocturnal Instinct is perhaps their most polished project to date.

While staying true to the underground, The Owls have levelled up again as the album boasts plenty of big name features from across the pond. Prepare for dope verses from RA The Rugged Man, Kool G Rap, Masta Killa and Roc Marciano, as well as their second DJ Premier produced heater, ‘100%’. RLD Records’ Smellington Piff is the only UK artist billed, rejoining The Owls for the album’s opening track ‘Sound The Alarm’.

Leaf Dog’s production shines across the 14 tracks, chopping up varied samples into soulful soundscapes for the illest spitting. Pace winds down during the second half of the album, ultimatly closing with ‘All My Life Part 2’ – a poignant follow-up to the first installment on their iconic debut album, Nature’s Greatest Mystery.

It’ll be no surprise when the avian veterans spread their wings and find even more global success thanks to Nocturnal Instinct. Stream the full album now and cop it on your favourite format via the High Focus Shop.
