Album: Kendrick Lamar- Untitled Unmastered

Nearly a year after the release of the now iconic To Pimp a Butterfly Kendrick Lamar has given a surprise offering in the form of Untitled Unmastered, an eight track album composed of unused studio material. Coming following a twitter request from LeBron James the album is, in Kendrick’s words, more a ‘project’ than an album but stands to become a strong fan offering with a wide selection of material accompanying the earlier TPAB.

Like the previous album, Untitled Unmastered demonstrates the same authentic instrumentation and funk and jazz tinged production as well as the deep and creative lyricism Kendrick has become famous for. Unlike the more grandiose and polished TPAB Untitled Unmastered is more of a collage of material that gives an insight into Kendrick’s work and music.

Like any Kendrick album this is certainly one that takes a few listens to fully unpack and get into but serves as a perfect gift for fans waiting on more material from one of hip hop’s current biggest forces.
