Mixtape Review: Levelz - LVL 11

Mixtape Review: Levelz - LVL 11

99 years ago, the atom was first split in a pioneering experiment conducted in Manchester. It was the work of scientist Ernest Rutherford, who understood that an atom is made of a nucleus with a cloud of electrons orbiting it. And orbiting Manchester’s potent musical nucleus are the fourteen members of the Levelz crew, pushing a sound which fragments that nucleus and turns the explosion into something colossal, bass-heavy and inescapably Mancunian.

The length and breadth of the musical terrain covered by the members of the Levelz crew is formidable; the roles are fluid, but on the whole production duties fall to Biome, Bricks, Chimpo, Dub Phizix and Metrodome, and the mic is kept warm by Black Josh, Chunky, Fox, Skittles, Sparkz, T-Man and Truthos Mufasa. Jonny Dub and Rich Reason (who runs the Hit & Run club night) round things off as the crew’s resident DJs.

Having already hosted a takeover on Rinse FM and appeared in session for Toddla T’s Radio 1 show, on Monday the Levelz crew will drop their most ambitious project to date, a 13-track mixtape called LVL 11. Its name is a tip of the hat to the catalogue number naming policy of legendary Manchester label Factory Records – which brought the world Joy Division, the Happy Mondays and the Hacienda – and the giddy Manchester ethos is preserved, centre stage and draped in the stark, often self-deprecating humour for which the city is known.

Two of the tracks – LVL 07 and LVL 09 – have been out as pay-what-you-want downloads from Levelz’s bandcamp page (https://levelzmcr.bandcamp.com/) for some time, and the marriage of the cataclysmically gritty beats with mission-statement verses from each of the Levelz MCs proved a perfect introduction to a collective henceforth known for chaotic free-form cyphers. The cocktail of styles, flows, lyrics and one-liners was and is a heady boundary-pusher, and having them all on one track showed just how little the collective cared for the idea of one homogenous sound.

Batz In da Belfry - Origami (prod. KE on the track)

Batz In da Belfry - Origami (prod. KE on the track)

Lyrical Manchester duo Envy and One Da, who make up Batz in da belfry have done it again as they drop this heavy new track with K.E. on the Track, ummm on the track - a Florida based producer who has produced for Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, DJ Khaled, Future, Gucci Mane, Ace Hood and more! They bring some sick flow patterns which compliment the beat really well and if you haven't heard of these girls then by the end of the track you'll wonder how!

Pepsi Max and Noisey present 48 Hour Mixtape - Episode 2 - Dave Murkage

Pepsi Max and Noisey present 48 Hour Mixtape - Episode 2 - Dave Murkage

Given the slew of due attention that the Manchester bass and grime scene has been receiving over the past 10+ years, it's no surprise to see that the city now has a massive eco-system of MCs, producer, DJs and labels who are all repping 0161 with pride. Only recently Bugzy Malone hit #8 in the charts with his new EP, and across dubstep, grime, hip hop and drum & bass there's a powerful sound which holds nothing back when it comes to making those straight underground bangers!

In the latest episode of the Pepsi Max project with Noisey, we see Dave Murkage, from the Murkage Cartel follow on from JME in the opening episode to create a mixtape, which works as a soundtrack to summer in their city. As exciting as this challenge actually is, the bigger test is the need to create it from a blank canvas, in just 48 hours! Early mornings, late nights, and a lot of creative juices are flowing, so you're in for a treat.

Many artists would probably tell you it is a near impossible task, and crumble under the pressure, which is why Noisey chose respectable names who had the heart to achieve such a feat! In this mini Manchester movie (which was directed by the one and only Mike Skinner of The Streets), Dave Murkage provides some great nuggets of wisdom as he narrates his way through this story, as he reaches out to an ample selection of the city's most revered artists like DRS, Fallacy, T-Man from LEVELZ and a ton more to complete his challenge.

Watch as he visits some of the Manny's most established recording studios and take a peep into the creative process as the clock is ticking, to see how he works with the city's most respected talent to create seven tracks in 48 hours! And Dave isn't taking this challenge lightly, as he declares:

"not only is it a personal challenge but I feel like I want to represent the city".

In the way Murkage know how to do in their own high energy way, the challenge ends and the tracks are showcased to artists and fans alike, in a banging house party!

Watch the video below, and make sure you grab a download of the project direct from Noisey. This isn't the end though! Keep a look out for the final episode in the series coming soon from Oya festival in Oslo.

You may have already seen the Pepsi Max stage at Wireless but if you’re heading to Creamfields in Manchester, make sure you check it out there too!

Interview: The Bluntskins talk Manchester's music community and more!

We caught up with the fast emerging Manchester hip hop collective who combine the dopest smoked out hip hop beats with a good input of weed related content. As they geat up to their imminent new projects and string of festival appearances, Oli chatted to them about life inside and out of the Blunt Cave.

Welcome to BlatantlyBlunt! First off, how did you all meet and what made you decide to form ‘The Bluntskins?’

Thank you for having us. We all met at the Blunt Cave which was effectively a flat we all lived in. Out of our mutual love for hip hop and cannabis came The Bluntskins, it was an organic progression.
